Introduction
In 1838 the first religious services in Long Grove were held in the James Brownlie family home. In 1840 a Christian Church was organized and for several years services were held in a log meeting house. In 1860 a wood frame building was erected, on the present site, at a cost of $1,000 and hours of donated labor. There have been continuous Christian Church services to this day.
The cemetery was laid out next to the church. the first burial in the Long Grove Cemetery was that of William Brownlie in November, 1846. However, at that time the cemetery was unfenced and livestock roamed over the graves. In 1858 the perimeter of the cemetery was fenced and rail fences around some of the early graves were removed. In later years more adjacent land was added to the cemetery.
The early records of the church and cemetery were lost in a fire that partially destroyed the home of Robert Brownlie in 1870. The existing records begin with 1873 when the church was incorporated.
Guy and Eunice McCubbin compiled this information from cemetery and available church records as well as what is actually on the headstones.
I transcribed their information into a Microsoft Works for Windows Data Base so that it would be readily available (in print or on floppy disk) to anyone who would like it. This project was interesting to me because so much of my history is centered in this area in the Clapp, Thomson and Evans families. I hope that others will find it useful.
