The following is what my grandmother Edith Raff wrote in the 1930's about her father, Almon:

Almon Keeler Raff was one of seven children living in Canton Ohio. Their father and mother died of cholera when A. K. Raff was seven years of age. His brothers were Alf and Barney. His sisters were Ethalinda, Margaret, Rose and Polly House. [I don't if she was confused about these last two sisters or if they were adopted by a different family.]*

These children were adopted by their relatives. A. K. Raff was adopted by Uncle Daniel and Aunt Elizabeth (called Grandma and Grandpa Raff.)

Uncle Daniel and Aunt Elizabeth had four children of their own, Francis, Mary, Rebecca and Henry.

Francis married Monroe Ebi and Becky married Charlie Cock. Henry married Laura and they had three daughters, May, Lida and Nettie. Mary was a Latin teacher and coach in Davenport. She taught Latin and Algebra during the summer months to prepare students for college. Mary looked after Grandma Raff until her death in 1894.

Uncle Daniel's family moved to Davenport Iowa at the close of the Civil War.

Uncle Monroe [Ebi] and Aunt Frank [nickname for Francis]* had two children--Helen Elizabeth Ebi and Albert Raff Ebi. Helen married Earl Snider and they had 2 children--Elizabeth and William Herbert.

Elizabeth married Elwyn Simmons and Herbert did not marry.

Elizabeth had two children--Susan and John.

Lida Raff married John Jordan and they had Marie. Marie had one son, Philip Messenger.

* Brackets are my own comments.

Almon K. Raff, with many other Ohio Raffenspergers legally shortened the name to Raff .

During the Civil War he joined the 19th Ohio Infantry and rose to the rank of Captain by the end of the war. According to the Ohio Historical Society, some of the battles he fought in were: Shiloh, Tenn., (April 6-7, 1862), Corinth, Miss.,(May 30, 1862),Stones River, Tenn. (Dec. 31, 1862, Jan.1-2, 1863), Chickamauga, Ga. (Sept 19-20, 1863), Mission Ridge, Tenn. (Nov. 25,1863), Kenesaw Mountain, Ga. (June 9-30, 1864), Atlanta Ga. (July 22, 1864), Nashville, Tenn. (Dec. 1-16, 1864). This information from the "Roster of Ohio Soldiers 1861-1866".

I believe that his Aunt Elizabeth, Uncle Daniel and the family moved to Davenport before the Civil War's end, because in a letter from Almon to Frank (Frances) dated 1864, he complains that he hasn't heard from "Auntie" and wonders why it takes the mail so long to reach him from Iowa.

A small stone near his grave is engraved with the letters "ESR".

She was an active member of the local First Baptist church, and one of the leaders in the work of the local Young Women's Christian Association, of which she was a board member.

She married CORNELIUS MARION BELL August 27, 1919 in Muscatine, Muscatine Co., Iowa, son of WILLIAM BELL and MARIAH BELL. He was born March 23, 1863 in Shelbyville, Shelby Co., MO, and died January 01, 1946 in Davenport, Scott Co., IA.

Notes for MARY EDITH RAFF:

Mary went by her middle name, Edith. She was a school teacher in Muscatine for many years and became one of the first female principals in the Muscatine Schools. While going through Edith's letters and photos, I found two letters that indicate that Edith was married to C.M. in an elopement-style manner. At least her good friend Mabel and her cousin, Frank and aunt, Jo had no idea it had happened until after the fact.

Notes for CORNELIUS MARION BELL:

Cornelius was supposedly a sheriff in "LaGrange" county Missouri from Abt. 1893-1895. Although there is no LaGrange Co., there is a town called La Grange in Lewis Co. which is next door to Shelby Co., where C.M. was born. CM owned and operated a burial vault business in Muscatine Iowa for many years. He supposedly invented the concrete burial vault, but neglected to get a patent for it, thereby losing the Bell family fortune before it was made.

Cornelius first married Tennie Phillips in Missouri. I believe they had four children. Ruby, Earl, Ernest and Elmer. Tennie died in 1894, and he decided to raise the children from that union before remarrying, which he did. Ruby married William Petersen and they farmed near Muscatine Iowa for many years before retiring to Muscatine. Elmer married Lina ? and they lived in Rock Island, Il. Earl married Caddy Ribble. They lived in Cedar Rapids, IA., and then CA. I don't know about Ernest.

My grandmother, (Mary) Edith Raff, married C.M. Bell in 1919 in Muscatine.

The following obituary was taken from the Davenport newspaper:

Cornelius M. Bell, who was formerly connected with the Hildebrand Vault Co., died at 3:15 P.M. Tuesday at his home 2313 1/2 Eastern Avenue, following a short illness. Mr. Bell was born March 23, 1863 in Shelby county, Mo., and received his education in the schools there. His first wife, Tennie Phillips, to whom he was married in 1884, died in 1890. There were five children by his first marriage. ( I believe this number was wrong, unless there was a baby we don't know about) He was married in July 1919, to Edith Raff in Muscatine, and to this marriage one daughter was born. He had resided in Muscatine for some time before coming to Davenport 12 years ago. He was a member Calvary Baptist church.

Surviving are his widow; two daughters, Mrs. William Peterson of Muscatine and Mrs. James Hanson of Davenport; three sons, Elmer Bell of Rock Island, Earl Bell of Palo Alto, Calif., and Ernest Bell of Long Beach Calif.; four sisters, four Brothers and six grandchildren.

The body was removed to Hill & Fredericks mortuary and services will be held in the chapel at 1:30 P.M. Friday. Burial will be in Oak Dale cemetery.

Note: according to Cornelius' obituary, all his siblings were alive in 1946.

Found a mystery in a book of my grandma's (Edith). In her handwriting at the back of the book, she has written "Cornelius MADISON Bell."

Marriage Notes for MARY EDITH RAFF and CORNELIUS BELL:

This was C M Bell's second marriage. His first wife was Tennie Phillips Bell. From this union came four children, Ruby, Elmer, Caddie? and ? These children were born in Muscatine, Iowa , I believe.

MARY EDITH RAFF and CORNELIUS BELL had one child.
