John K. and Margaret Paddle Brennan were born in Kilkenny, Ireland. They came to the United States, arriving in New York, during the potato famine in Ireland. They then proceeded to Moingona, now Boone, Iowa, and lived there for several years, after which they moved to a farm three miles east of Ruthven. The farm was homesteaded in 1877, under President Hayes, and was known as the Ayrshire or Brennan Corner.

Michael Brennan Dead
Yesterday we learned, with sincere regret, of the death of Mr. Michael Brennan, the second son of Mr. and Mrs. John K. Brennan of Highland Township. He had been sick for five days with erysipelas. Monday evening his condition was not considered serious, but early yesterday morning he became worse and died a few moments later. The funeral will be held at Ruthven tomorrow. Had the deceased lived until March, he would have been 21. His parents, tow borthers- T.J. an James- and two sisters-Katie and Mrs. J.C. Brennan-are the remaining members of the family, which is one of the most respected in the west part of the county. He was highly regarded by all because of his exemplary habits and his honorable traits. He died when manhood's years were dawning and when the energies of youth were prepared for the higher labors of life.

Laid to Rest Last Friday
Last week brief mention was made in these columns concerning the death of Mrs. James E. Brennan, of Great Oak township. Her death occurred Wednesday morning. The funeral was held Friday forenoon. It was very large. There were 86 teams in the procession. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. J. Smith and the remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery.
The deceased lived in this county for many years. Two years ago her husband died. She was quite ill at the time of his death and subsequently there was little improvement in her condition. During the past few months her recovery seemed beyond all hope and she gradually yielded to the inevitable. She was a quiet, humble woman. Industry, prudence, kindness and Christian-like devotion to the care of home and family, characterized her labor through life. The closing years of her earthly journey were saddened by misfortune and reverses. Although her husband had left her a comfortable home and had made abundant provision for the family, his death, the death of a grown son, and her own lingering and protracted illness were enough to weigh heavily on the stoutest heart. One son and six daughters survive. The son and one daughter are married. The other daughters are at home. The deceased was about 45 years of age. Peace to the soul of a good woman.

James E. Brennan Dead
His Sufferings Ended Yesterday Morning
James E. Brennan is dead. His sufferings were many and his recent misfortunes severe. The end came yesterday morning and the affectionate father and husband joined the ranks of the many who had gone before him without a murmur, and happy in the thought that he had at least served his family, friends, community, and state faithfully and to the full extent of the power that had been given him to serve them.
The funeral will be held at ten o'clock tomorrow. It will be under the direction of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, of which he was for years an earnest, loyal, useful, and deserving member. A wife, son, and six daughters survive him. Mrs. Brennan is at present dangerously ill and serious doubts are entertained as to her recovery. A son died but a few months ago and now the fond father is taken from that afflicted home. The aged mother of Mr. Brennan still survives and a large family of brothers and sisters of the deceased reside in this community. He was 53 years of age. He was a native of Stratford, Ontario, and was for twenty-six years a resident of this county.
Great Oak had no better or no more upright citizen than James E. Brennan. There was nothing small, shallow, or vain about him. He was frank, earnest, thoughtful, conscientious, reliable, honorable, and generous. His motives were the highest and his devotion to the welfare of his family and neighbors the most unselfish. He was a man of sincerity, of positive convictions, and of unwavering, lasting friendship. His word could always be depended upon and his promise was as valuable, as binding as his bond.
There are good lessons in the life and death of James E. Brennan for all who can profit by the deeds and the examples of a life well spent. The record of his manhood and his usefulness to his fellow-men will be all the stronger and brighter as years roll by. He lived and exemplary, Christian life and his still living deeds constitute the most fitting epitaph that can be written for the preservation of his memory in the minds of those who knew him, who associated with him, who respected him.

One of Ruthven's Estimable Ladies Called to Her Final Reward
Mrs. E.J. Ruddy died at her home at Ruthven last Sunday evening, March 24. Seh gave birth to a daughter March 3 and never recovered from the effects of her confinement. The funeral wil be held at Ruthven this morning. Services will be conducted at the Catholic church by Father Schaefer. Teh interment will bein the parochial cemetery where rest the remains of other members of the family of the deceased. The pall bearers chosen are Charles Mets, Nicholas Geelan, D Barnett, M.M. Maher, Henry Currans, and John Fleming.
Catherine Brennan was born at Mongonia, Iowa, August 3, 1869. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John K. Brennan. Her parents moved to Highland township, this county, in April, 1871. She was married to E.J. Ruddy, May 4, 1898, since which time Mr. and Mrs. Ruddy made their home in the vicinity of Ruthven. There are seven small children-three boys and four girls. The oldest is twelve and the youngest is three weeks.. Their names are Loretta, Mary, Michael, John, Veronica, Edward, and Catherine. Two brothers, T.J. and J.P. Brennan live in Ruthven and vicinity. A sister, Mrs. J.C. Brennan, resides in Emmetsburg twonship and another sister, Mrs. F.G Sullivan lives at Estherville.
Mrs. Ruddy was one of the best wives and mothers in our county. Her death is particularly sad. Teh loss of he mother of a number of helpless little children always appeals to the sympathy of the stoutest hearts. However, she was fully reconciled to give up her home, her husband and dear ones, because she considered that it was God's will that she should do so. During her last hours she called them all to her bedside, told them what she wanted them to do and outlined the provisions that she wished to have made for them. That Providence will bless them and protect them from harm, is the sincere prayer of the many friends of the family. The sympathy goes out to Mr. Ruddy and his little children in the great loss that they have sustained.

Twentieth Anniversary Marriage of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Brennan
Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Brennan of Emmetsburg township were pleasantly surprised by their many relatives and friends, the occasion being the 20th anniversary celebration of their marriage. Their callers came not only with many expressions of good will, but also with well filled baskets. The afternoon and evening were spent in feasting and in various kinds of amusements. Mr. and Mrs. Brennan were the recipients of a number of valued presents, which will often bring to their minds cherished memories of thee most enjoyable affair. The Democrat joins the many friends and relatives of the bride and groom of twenty years ago in expressing the sincere wish that they may have the happiness to celebrate their golden wedding. Among those who came from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sullivan of Estherville, Mr. and Mrs. T.J. Brennan, Mr. and Mrs. James Brennan, and E.J. Ruddy and family of Ruthven. James P. Brennan was born on the homestead on March 15, 1877. On November 29, 1905, he married Mary Fleming from Ayrshire, at Sacred Heart Church. They were married by Father Carrol. James P. and Mary made their home and continued farming on the homestead until 1936 when they moved to Emmetsburg. James P. and Mary had 8 children.
....James P. and Mary are now deceased. The homestead was torn down in 1986, but the memories remain of the Sunday ball games that took place in south pasture, and the beautiful door yard filled with cars and visitors.

Brennan-Fleming
Mr. James P. Brennan and Miss mary C. Fleming, both of Highland township, were married at the Catholic church at Ayrshire this morning. Father Carroll officiating. The birde was attended by Miss Mary Brennan and the groom by Mr. Joseph Fleming. Only the relatives of the bride and groom were in attendance. After the words were pronounced that united the happy couple for life, all repaired to the house of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Fleming, where a sumptuous wedding dinner was served. We understand that Mr. and Mrs. bernnan will leave today on a wedding trip, but to what points we have not learned. On their return they will begin housekeeping on their farm in Highland township which is the old Brennan homestead.
This important event unites two of the most worthy young people in Highland. The groom is brother of Thomas Brennan of Ruthven. He is widely known and his acquaintances are his staunch friends. He is a model young man. In fact all the brothers and sisters in the family are in every sense ladies and gentlemen. The bride is in every way worthy of him who has chosen her as his life companion. She represents one of the best families in the county and has a host of friends who hold her in the highest esteem. She has been teaching school for a number of years and has met with marked success in her chosen calling. She is winsome and cheery and her personality is such as to make those about her feel that she is their best friend and well wisher.

Vincent Brennan was born on October 27, 1913. He married Margaurite Kibbie of Ayrshire, at Sacred Heart Church in 1943. She passed away in December of 1943. Vince was an employee of Sears & Roebuck for forty-two years. He married Colleen Barry of Algona, Iowa, in 1962. Vince has one daughter, Ann Terese Kehr, of Blue Earth, Minnesota. He has five step-children: Dick Barry of Chicago, Illinois; Tom Barry of Storm Lake, Iowa; mary Kay Munsterteiger of Boston, Massachusetts; Sue Barry of Chicago, Illinois; and Marcia Beatty of Emmetsburg. They have a number of grandchildren.

Adrian Brennan was born on September 18, 1910. He married Margaret Noonan of Ayrshire, in Sacred Heart Church in 1940. Adrian moved to Emmetsburg, and was in the poultry business. Later, he was employed by the police department and became police chief. In October of 1976, he suffered a stroke and resided at Lakeside Lutheran Home until his death in January of 1988. Adrian and Margaret had eight children; John of Emmetsburg; Pat, Bill, Jean, and Katy of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Margaret Sikora of Emmetsburg; Jim of Jackson, Minnesota; and Mary DeVries of George, Iowa. Margaret Brennan now resides at Lakeside Lutheran Home.

Joe also ran a monument business out of his home. He died in 1988.
