James Hickey Dead

In our last issue we made mention of the death of James Hickey, one of the pioneers of Palo Alto county, but lack of time and space forbid our making further comment upon the life of this worthy old gentleman. Mr. Hickey had been enfeebled with age for many years. For several days before his death the family realized that the end was fast approaching. On Monday evening, May 18, he passed away. Funeral services were conducted at St. Thomas Church by Rev. M. McNerney on Wednesday morning and the remains tenderly laid away for final rest in St. John cemetery. The pall bearers were J.J. Mahan, C.T. Nolan, P.C. Neary, M.F. Coonan, J.P. Conway and Alex Cullen.

James Hickey was born in 1827 at Gorman, county Kilkenny, Ireland. When a young man he came to America and located at Philadelphia. In February of the year 1855 he was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Hogan. The following year they came to Iowa.

They located on a homestead in Great Oak township about three miles south and west of Emmetsburg in September, 1856. Here Mr. Hickey kept a country post office for the accommodation of the early settlers. Two years later he was elected county judge, the first Palo Alto county had had. In 1864 he was elected clerk of the courts. With A. Hood of Fr. Dodge he was selected to make the first government survey of this and the four adjoining counties. He was a capable and conscientious man and hence he was natrually selected by the people to represent them in matters where efficient and honest service was required. From Great Oak, the Hickey family moved to Vernon township where they subsequently made their home and where Mr. and Mrs. Hickey resided up to the time of his death.

Fourteen children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hickey, eleven of whom survive their father. Their daughters are Mrs. Patrick McNally and Mrs. Anthony Ruddy of this city, Mrs. L.E. Conway and Mrs. H.E. Fergeson of Vernon township, Mrs. E.J. Sinclair of lavoy, Alberta, and Miss Alice Hickey who remained at home with her parents. The sons are Michael of Wyoming, John, Daniel, and Thomas who live in Vernon township and P.J. Hickey of Oelwein, Iowa. The three children who died when young were Mathew, James and Mary. Mrs Patrick McNally who still resides here was the first white child born in Palo Alto county.

The deceased was one of the most prominent figures among the earlier history of this county. His name is a familiar one, not only to the people of this county but throughout the whole of northwest Iowa. He was a strong character and enjoyed the unbounded respect of all who knew him. His sense of honor, honesty, and uprightness was keen and always active and his dealings never made him and enemy. For the opinions of others he had the highest respect and as a citizen his entire life might well be taken as a model. In his active years he was public spirited in all things and was always one of the first to be called upon and counselled in matters pertaining to the public welfare all feeling that he was broad enough to view every question aside from any sordid or selfish personal interests, and his confidence was frequently evidenced by the positions of public honor and trust that were accorded to him. He was a faithful, consistent, and conscientious member and supporter of the faith of his ancestors the Catholic church and a devout and sincere christian. He was a man of generous impulses and never forgot the ways of the early settler. The stranger, even though a beggar, never failed to find food and shelter if he sought it at his hands. The writer knew Mr. Hickey well and regarded him as a warm personal friend and today can recall many, many kind words and helpful acts for which we are personally indebted to him. He lived to the good old ripe age of 87 years, yet his wife and children would fain have him remain longer and though his death was timely they will miss him. To them we extend sincere sympathy and especially to the aged wife whose remaining days will be sad indeed. Mr Hickey lived nobly and died peacefully. Few of us will live so long or so well. May he rest in peace.

QRYTEXT: John J. Conway, died 1937, age 74. That would be "Uncle Jack". In those depression years, I recall him driving up to Fred Beschorner's farm in Vernon Twsp. with his horse and buggy, and a "few" fish. Uncle Jack loved to fish. He would catch the limit of 25 bullheads up at Mud lake and then catch 25 for Tom. Tom was the horse. Uncle Jack was uncle to my aunt Maggie Beschorner. He brought Maggie a mess of fish knowing full well he would be invited to dinner and to stay over for a day or two, also.

He always teased us kids. He would put on his hat and coat and declare that he was leaving - and tell the kids that they couldn't go along, when in fact he was not going anywhere. He always had the tip of your nose in his fist with that old trick of pinching your nose between the knuckles of his first two fingers, then displaying the tip of his thumb between those two fingers.

Uncle Jack raised potatoes in the peat bog up in Northern Vernon Twsp. Once, when asked how his spuds were doing, replied: Well sir, yesterday I opened up a hill and three bushels rolled out before I could close up the hole !

This was the Uncle Jack who married Aunt Al Hickey. Neither married again after a very short wedded life. Aunt Al was the one who baked the biscuits you "could knock a bull down with, or knock a hole in he barn door with."

How could one ever forget (Great) Uncle Jack ?

Mrs. McNally Passes Away at Mallard

Was born in 1856 the First White Child in Palo Alto County

Mrs. Margaret Hickey McNally, daughter of the Judge and Mrs. James Hickey passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ben Doerning of Mallard Thursday, May 5 after a prolonged illness. The most tender care and nursing was given her for the many years she suffered. She was a remarkably patient patient. Death seemed to come at last as a kind relief.

Funeral services were conducted at the Assumption church at 9:30 Saturday morning. The Rev. Father Finnegan officiated and celebrated a requiem high mass. The pallbearers were Ralph Grethen, Harold Clennon, Irvin Joynt, Gerald McNally, and Herman and Arnold Doerning, six grandsons of the deceased. Burial was in St. John's cemetery beside the body of her husband who died some years ago.

Mrs. Margaret Hickey was the first white child born in Palo Alto County. Mr and Mrs. James Hickey came to Ft. Dodge about the time the original Irish Colony came to Palo Alto county and joined the colony here a few months later, in the early fall of 1856.

On October 14, 1856 Margaret was born. The following spring the Hickey family moved farther south across the river and located on section 35-96-33, or in Emmetsburg Township. She attended the country school and later went to school at Ft. Dodge, making the trips to and from that place by stage. Much of fher education was obtained while she helped her mother in the home, or caring for her younger brothers and sisters, or helping her father in the postoffice.

She grew to womanhood on the farm and on November 25, 1879 she united in marriage with Patrick McNally. For five years they made their home on a farm and then moved to Emmetsburg.

In 1888 they took up their residence in their own home here where they resided until July 5, 1923 when Mr. McNally passed away. Mrs. McNally continued to reside there until September, 1930, when she was taken to the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.B. Doerning, where she was cared for.

Mrs. McNally was a woman of fine character. She had a gentle and loving disposition. She was earnest, kind and true to her family and friends. A devoted wife and mother, she never left anything undone which meant peace, comfort or happiness to her loved ones. Her name has always been one of hte prominent ones in Palo Alto County and will always be remembered in the history of the place.

She is survived by three sons, W.P. and Rob of this county and James of Sibley and six daughters, Mrs. Tom Joynt of Emmetsburg Township, Mrs. B.F. Doerning and Mrs. Pete Grethen of Mallard, Mrs. J. J. Clennon of Sioux Falls, Mrs. Nick Marks of East Chain, Minnesota, Mrs. Elmer Frederick of Osgood and Miss Sarah McNally of Mallard.

To all of them the Tribune extends sincere sympathy, and is assured that her blessed memory will be a great consolation to them.

Notes for PATRICK MCNALLY:

From the Palo Alto Tribune, Wed, July 11, 1923:

Pat McNally Laid to Rest

Cancer Brings Death to Longtime Resident of County Thursday, July 5

Mr. Patrick McNally died at his home in the Third ward at 2 a.m. Thursday, July 5, after a lengthy illness. For some time Mr. McNally has been in a very serious condition. He was taken to Iowa City in the early spring but it was learned that he was suffering from an internal cancer and could not be helped. He suffered a great deal and, sad though death always is, it came to him as a kindly relief.

Funeral services were conducted at the Assumption Church at ten o'clock Saturday. Monsignor Farrelly officiated and celebrated a requiem high mass, assisted by Rev. J.J. Neppel of Mallard and Rev. L.J. Savage. The body was laid to rest in St. John's cemetery.

The active pall bearers were W.I. Branagan, John O'Brien, Robert Laughlin, James Neary, Dan Burns and T.F. Rutledge. The honarary pall bearers were all grandsons of Mr. McNally. They were Ralph and Edwin Joynt, Herman and Patrick Doering, Francis and Gerald McNally.

Patrick McNally was born at Exonia, Wisconsin on September 25, 1855. He came to Iowa in 1872 and lived on a farm west of town for many years. He farmed for some time before coming to Emmetsburg. He worked for the Creamery company for several years. This was thirty-nine years ago.

Later he engaged in business for himself in this city. This business he conducted for many years.

On November 24, 1879, he was united in marriage with Miss Maggie A. Hickey. To this union ten children were born. All survive their father and were at his bedside at the time of his death.

The seven daughters are Mrs. T.P. Joynt, of Emmetsburg township, Mrs. J.B. Doerning and Mrs. P.J. Grethen of Mallard, Mrs. J.J. Clemon of Sioux Falls, Mrs. W. Mart of Fairmont Minn., Mrs. E.J. Frederick of Osgood and Miss Sarah McNally who is at home.

The three sons are W.P. and R.F. McNally of this city and J.J. McNally of Sibley. He is also survived by his wife, one sister and six brothers. The sister is Mrs. J.J. Kane of this city. The brothers are Myles, John and Edward McNally of this place, C.J. McNally of Austin, Minn., Thomas McNally of Green Bay, Wis., and Alexander of Waterloo. He has also thirty-three grandchildren.

For over fifty-one years Mr. McNally was a resident of this county. In that time he formed a broad acquaintance, and few who knew him would speak ill of him.

In his home he meant much to his family. He was a devoted husband, a kind and indulgent father. The tender care and the devotion which were lavished upon him during his last illness was expressive of the great devotion of his wife and children for him. The exceptionally large attendance at his funeral showed the high regard in which he was held in the community.

While Mr. McNally was congenial and easy to deal with, he had decided opinions of his own, and his convictions, whether right or wrong, were honest and sincere. He was hearty, hospitable and neighborly. He loved to do a good turn to another and was deeply grateful for any kindness extended to him. He had very many admirable traits of character, that were hidden under the cover of unostentation. His life might naturally have been prolonged for many years had it not been for the uncurable cancer. This thought, together with the agonizing absence of a loved one, will make the grief of the bereaved exceedingly difficult to bear. But time and a hope in future reward will bring consolation to their sorrowing hearts.

To them the Tribune extends sincere sympathy.

Late L.E. Conway Led Useful Life Genial and Ready

Served on County Council of Defense and County Mutual Board

In our last issue we mentioned briefly as we were going to press, the death of L.E. Conway of Vernon township which occurred Thursday forenoon. The funeral was held on Saturday. Services were conducted in the Catholic Church at Graettinger, the pastor, Father J.J. Kelly celebrating a requiem high mass and preaching an impressive sermon in which he paid a fitting tribute to the worth of Mr. Conway as a member of his church and as a citizen. He was assisted by Rev. Leo McEvoy a relative of the deceased. The burial was in St. John's cemetery south of this city. There was a large attendance of relatives, old neighbors and friends. The pall bearers were Geo. Kliegl, john Goeders, Andrew Gappa, Peter O'Leary, Martin Laughlin and Michael Foley.

Lawrence E Conway was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John (Collins) Conway. He was born at Ottawa, Canada, July 30, 1858. He was 69 years of age. Mr. Conway was united in marriage in the old Catholic Church northwest of this city to Miss Teresa A. Hickey, February 7, 1887. Besides his widow, he leaves to mourn his passing eight sons and daughters. They are Mrs. I. E Drew of Cylinder, Mrs. J. A. Kliegl, J.W. Conway of Graettinger, Mrs. C.A. Frederick of Cylinder, John L. of Osgood, Ambrose of Estherville and Mrs. Delbert Conlon of Ayrshire and Leo of Graettinger. His death is also mourned by four brothers-James P. and J.J. of Graettinger, Thomas of Estherville, and Michael of St. Louis, and by two sisters, Mrs. J.W. Hickey and Mrs. Frank King of Graettinger. Another daughter, Mrs. Chas. Nolan, died in Emmetsburg a few years ago. Mr. Conway's parents came to Palo Alto county from Canada in 1870. They lived close to the present town of Osgood for many years. Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Conway resided on their Vernon township farm for 36 years. Mr. Conway was well known to the early settlers of Palo Alto as well as to those who located later in our county. He was open hearted, genial, jolly and off handed and he made friends easily. He was a close, observing reader, a pleasing, interesting converser and an all around good fellow in the popular sense of the term. He was eager to acknowledge the good qualities that characterized those with whom he came in contact. There was not a dull hour in a gathering of neighbors or friends when Mr. Conway was present and was feeling hearty. The writer served with him for a couple of years on the county council of defense during the World War. We found him one of the most patriotic, useful, pratical and reasonable members of the organization. He stood for a square deal for all including those with whom he might not always agree in matters under consideration. He was for a long time a director of the County Medical Insurance association. He gave the publick intelligent, honest, faithful service. He was a dutiful, provident husband and a forebearing, loving father. He was at all times affable and hospitable. He was true to his convictions and to his friends. He longed ardently for the success for the principles for which he stood. For nearly a quarter of a century he labored tirelessly, expectantly for the upbuilding and the betterment of his home community, our county and our state. The hundreds who knew him lament his passing and will long cherish fondly memories of his well spent life and his many generous deeds. Mrs. Conway, the worthy sons and daughters and the bereft brothers and sisters have the sympathy of our many readers in their sorrow.

McNally-Drummy

Monday morning, at 8:00, Mr. William P. McNally and Miss Josephine F. Drummy, both of this city, were united in marriage at St. Thomas church, rev. M. McNerney officiating. The bride and groom have resided in this city since childhood. Both were educated in St. Mary academy. Their early friendship ripened into enduring affection, the culmination of which was their marriage on Monday. The bride is deservedly held in high regard by the many young people as well as by all other citizens of our community, who esteem her for her many qualities that are so necessary for the adornment of judicious, worthy womanhood. She is fully deserving of the genial, courteous, upright young gentleman to whom she has entrusted her future happiness, for he, too, justly merits the popularity he enjoys among the people of Emmetsburg and vicinity. The Democrat extends hearty greetings to the newly wedded pair and hopes that....

Marriage Notes for MARGARET MCNALLY and JOHN CLENNON:

From the Emmetsburg Democrat, 10 Jan 1912:

Were Married Monday

Mr. John Joseph Clennon and Miss Margaret McNally

Mr. John Joseph Clennon and Miss Margaret McNally were united in marriage at Assumption church Monday morning.

Misses Ruth Reilly and Mary O'Brien rendered Mendellsohn's beautiful wedding march as the bridal party passed up the center aisle to the altar. The ceremony was performed by Rev. C.P. Conway. Miss Julia Drummy was bridesmaid and Mr. Eugene M. Clennon was best man. During the nuptial mass, Mr. C.J. Berger sang "O, Promise Me" and Miss Ruth Reilly sang "Ave Maria". A number of invited relatives were in attendance. At the close of the ceremony, the contracting parties repaired to the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. McNally, where a five course wedding breakfast was served. Only immediate relatives were in attendance. Mr. and Mrs. Clennon left on the south bound Rock Island passenger train for Joliet, Illinois where they will visit relatives and friends for a few days, after which they will spend a short time in Chicago. After March 1 they will make their home on a farm near West Bend.

The bride is one of Emmetsburg's popular, accomplished young ladies. She has resided in this city since childhood, attended St. Mary Academy for many years and has had athe best educational and social advantages that our community affords. That she has fully profited by them is more than apparent to all who know her. She was for several years employed in the mercantile establishments of our city and always proved herself capable, ready and popular as a saleslady. The West Bend people will find her a willing, cheerful helper in every worthy movement in which she may decide to apply her energies. Teh groom is one of our ideal young men. He is the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. M Clennon. No gentleman stands higher in the estimation of friends and associates. What could we say that would be more complimentary to him? We can assure the citizens of West Bend that he will more than make good as an intelligent worker and as an upright, exemplary, useful citizen. We join the many friends of the bride and groom in wishing them health and happiness.

Russell Odell Called Friday

Leaves Wife and Three Small Children. Funeral was Held Monday

Russell Odell of this place, who was ill for two weeks with pneumonia resulting from an attack of the flu, passed away Friday. The funeral was held in St. Thomas church Monday morning at 9:30. Father Orliwski officiating in th absence of Father McNerney. The interment was in St. John’s cemetery. The pall bearers were John Kleigl, Isaac Drew, Herman Leduc, Wm. Leduc, Ed McEwan and Anthony Ruddy.

Mr. Odell was born at Paxton, Illinois, June 19, 1892. His age was 37. Twenty-one years ago he came to this county where he subsequently resided. He was married in Emmetsburg October 9, 1924, to Miss Bridget Hickey. He is survived by his widow, and three sons-Robert, 6, Leland 4, and Matthew 2 1/2 years old. His death is also mourned by his mother, Mrs. Odell of Paxton, Illinois, who is quite advanced in years, and by one brother, Fred, of Milwaukee and by four sisters- Mrs. Lawrence Miller and Miss Nora Odell of Paxton, Illinois, Mrs. C.A. Tobias of Champaign, Ill., and Mrs. Gladys Rotrock of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The father died in 1917, and one brother, Paul, in 1910.

Mr. Odell was taken from his home and loved ones at amost unfavorable time in their lives. His three children were, of course, very dear to him and his devoted wife who needed every attention, physical and financial, that he could give them. It is very sad that he is not left to care for them but how many lamentable cases of this kind ther are in the course of human events. General and profound sympathy is offered to Mrs. Odell and her fatherless little folks in their bereavement.
