Notes for GEORGE LABATH:

According to Columbia Gazeteer Antalfalva is now Kovacica or Kovachista a Serbo-Croatian village with population 6070. Located in Vojvodina,N. Serbia,Jugoslavia 21 mi. NNE of Belgrade in the Banat; rail junction.

Vojvodina

The Hungarians of Yugoslavia live in a region called by two names: Vojvodina or Western Banat: (Hungarian: Vajdaság / Bánság). There, there are 2 million inhabitants, and Hungarians were, 339,491 in 1991, 16.9 % of the pop. After the 1st world war, the Banat was cut in half. Serbia received the western part (which is now part of Vojvodina), and Romania received the eastern part (which is now part of Transylvania).

From Synergia:

Austria-Hungarian Empire that ruled over the territory of todays Banat lasted until the end of the WWI when it collapsed, and one part of the Banat territory (the other is in today's Romania) became a part of Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Kraljevstvo Srba, Hrvata i Slovenaca) which was proclaimed in 1918. On January 6, 1929, after he abolished the Constitution and prorogued the Parliament, King Aleksandar changed the name of the state into the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (Kraljevina Jugoslavija). After the WWII, communists established their sovereignty over the whole territory of Yugoslavia (as one of the winning forces aftermath the WWII) and through the next 50 years, country changed its name from Federative People's Republic of Yugoslavia (FNRJ), Socialists Federative Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRJ), and after the recent civil war in 90's and proclamation of independent countries which previously constituted SFRJ, remaining Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Montenegro united as Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Several years ago, after the new Constitution was brought, state got its actual name – Serbia and Montenegro.

Kovacica (prior Antalfalva (HUN), Kowatschitza (GER)is a village in Banat, todays Serbia and Montenegro, Province of Vojvodina.

It is famous of its school of naive painting, which became well known to the world in the last decades.

It is a municipality with population of 7426 (2002) of which the majority are Slovaks (6337) who are mainly Evangelists.

According to the names and surnames, Labat family were Slovaks and Evangelists

Yeggs' Careful Plans to Open Office Safe Prove Productive of No Loot

A Safe in the private office of J.M. Siegel, joint proprietor of the Davenport Dry Goods company, 314-316 West Second street, proved a Will-o'-the-Wisp for yeggmen whose careful plans and tedious labor resulted in disappointment last night, when they found the safe devoid of valuables.

That the store robbery was planned last week is evidenced by the fact that a skylight in the fourth floor of the building was found torn from its hinges last Monday. Cross-beams were placed across the skylight as soon as the destruction wsa discovered but these beams did not deter the yeggs from entering last night. This morning, when the attempted safe robbery was discovered by George Labath, a janitor, the cross-piece had been torn away.

The yeggmen gained access to the skylight by climbing a fire escape on a building in the rear of the Siegel store, and walking over roofs. Descending thru the skylight to the third floor, they entered Mr. Siegel's office. There, they moved the office desk in front of the window so as to preclude discovery.

Adhesive tape was then wrapped about the combination knob of the safe to deaden the sound of blows believed to have been struck with a sledge hammer or other heavy implement. Police believe that it took the yeggmen several hours to open the safe.

When the janitor entered Mr. Siegel's office this morning, he found personal papers scattered about in general disorder. He notified the proprietor, who upon investigation stated that nothing had been taken. No money or articles commercially valuable had been kept in the safe.

Altho the usual closing time of the store is 5:30 o'clock in the evening, Mr. Siegel remained there until 6:30 o'clock last night because of an employes' lecture. The janitor left at 6:45 o'clock. The yeggmen are believed to have kept watch until everyone had left.

Police officers who took finger prints in Mr. Siegel's office today report that a skylight on the Katz Furniture company building nextg door had been tampered with. A dry goods company's elevator shaft had been broken, but this method of entrance apparently proved impossible for the thieves.

The Davenport Dry Goods company's "job" is similar to other safe attacks which have been perpetrated here during the last week, police officials state. An organized gang of yeggmen is alleged to be working in Davenport.
