Per History of Joynt Family by Stella Marks:

Andrew and Margaret lived in Knockmore in a stone house which he built just before they were married. It has two stories and a structure still stands on the site, but the story is that John's young wife had it remodeled soon after she moved in.

Andrew lived all his life at Knockmore, probably being raised by his grandparents and building himself a larger house when it came time for him to marry.

Subject: Re: 1901 census info for Joynt

I noticed a posting for a Robert Joynt, Ann J. Joynt, and James E. Joynt, that you posted for various Joynt census. I believe that Robert Joynt is my great grandfather, who was the son of Andrew Caldwell Joynt of Knockmore in Ireland. Anne Jane Joynt, her maiden name Shields, was his wife, and James E. Joynt was their first born child.

I also noticed in the section on cemetaries that you had listed my grandfather and grandmother. Cecil Ambrose Joynt married Marcella Eileen Vandewater, buried at Riverside cemetary. Cecil was the fourth son of Robert Joynt and Anne Jane Shields. They had five sons in all, James E. Joynt, Howard Joynt, Eckless Shields Joynt, Cecil Ambrose Joynt, and Newton Saunders Joynt.

I have a lot more info on this line, such as birth and death dates, and marriages. If you are interested let me know.

I would also like to thank you for the phone number of Stella Althouse Marks. I will have to give her a call, and I hope she is still alive. I do know about the book about Joynt G. Lett. I found someone who is related to him, and has a copy of the book. She is going to copy it and send it to me. The book is titles "In Those Days".

I believe you have also been in contact with my cousin Kim Joynt Tavares from Florida. She mentioned to me that she was in contact with you.

Anyway, thanks again,

Chris Griggs

Charles L. Joynt Biography

Into Michigan the dominion of Canada has sent many of her sons who have crossed the border and have found in the United States, because of it's livelier competition and greater business activity, the advantages they have sought. Among this number is Charles L. Joynt, who today is classed among the representative and successful farmers of Leelanaw townships, Leelanaw County. His home is on section 27 and here he has lived through almost a quarter of a century.

Mr Joynt was born in Leeds County, Ontario on the 21st of March 1842. He father, John Joynt, was a native of Ireland and on leaving the Emerald isle he crossed the Atlantic to the new world. His wife who bore the maiden name of Mary Layng, was a native of Scotland and both died in Leeds County, Ontario. Their marriage was blessed with a family of twelve children, six sons and six daughters.

Charles L. Joynt, the fifth in order of birth, was reared upon his father's farm in the place of his nativity, remaining at home until seventeen years of age. He then started out in life on his own account and learned the shoemaker's trade, serving a three years apprenticeship. After mastering the business, he followed that pursuit as a journeyman in Ontario until January 1880, when he severed the business relations which bound him to the Dominion and came to Leelanaw County, Michigan. At that time he took up his abode in Leelanaw township and has since been one of the prominent and influential citizens. Here he put aside his shoemaker tools and turned his attention to agricultural work. He today (1903) owns 255 acres of land, which is still increasing in value because of the natural rise in the price of land and because of the improvements which he has placed upon it. He now has 120 acres under cultivation ad upon his farm he has erected good buildings. In Leeds County, Ontario, on the 12th of Sept, 1866, Mr. Joynt was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Donovan, who was also a native of Leeds County and a daughter of Dennis and Elisabeth (Moris) Donovan. to this union were born seven children: Adelbert; Herbert O.; Mary E., who is now the wife of Alexander Galletch; Charles S.; Sarah A., who is the wife of W.S. Graves; Harriet A.; and Henry C. Mrs Joynt passed into the silent land on the 6th of Dec 1898, at the age of 58yrs. Mr Joynt is a member of the Congregational church of Omena and he votes with a Republican party, having given it a stalwart support since he became naturalized citizen the United States. His study into the questions which divide the two political parties led him to the belief that the Republican party contains the best elements of good government.

When Mr. Joynt came to Leelanaw county he drove across the country with a team from Port Huron, Michigan, thus covering a distance of 375 miles. Many have been the changes which have occurred during the years of his residence here and whatever has tended to promote the public progress, improvement and advancement has received his earnest endorsement and in many cases his co-operation [rjoynt.ged.FBK]

Herbert O. Joynt

Ten years is not a very long time, but many people have accomplished much in that period. A little more than 10 years ago the subject of this review, Herbert O. Joynt, was engaged in what is termed lumbering, and had been so laboring for many years. It is an honored vocation, but one that is laden with abundance of hard work and is by no means as remunerative as it should be for the amount of toil required. In less than 8 years the subject has risen from the position of an ordinary lumberman, through the various positions of fireman, assistant engineer and chief engineer, until he is now and has been for two years past general superintendent of the water works of Traverse City. Without the possession of the requisite talents and ablities, this never could have been accomplished.

Herbert O. Joynt was born in Portland, Ontario, Canada 10 Feb 1870. His father Charles L. Joynt, a native of Canada born in 1843. He was a farmer, was reared and educated in Canada and there he was married, in 1866, at New Boyne, to Sarah Donovan, also a native of Canada born in 1841. She also was reared and educated in Canada. They moved to Leelanaw County, Michigan, in 1880, and she died in 1897, at the age of 56 years, while her husband is still living, at his home in Omena, being in good health and giving fair promise of many years of usefulness. They were the parents of seven children, viz: Adelbert, a farmer, resides in Omena, Leelanaw county; Herbert O., the subject of this review; Mary E., wife of Alexander Galletch, stationary engineer, is employed and resides in Chicago; Ada, wife of Wilder H. Graves, resides at Silver City, New Mexico, where he went in 1900, on account of ill-health, was instructor in a gymnasium at Fargo, North Dakota, and since his removal to New Mexico his health has been almost completely restored; Charles, Jr., a machinist at Beloit, Wisconsin, is married and the father of an interesting family; Hattie resides at home with her father in Omena; Cowles is at home with his father, assisting in the farm work.

Up to the time he was 10 years of age the life of Herbert O. Joynt was spent on the farm in Canada where he was born. When his parents moved to Leelanaw county he, with the other members of his family, accompanied them. There he attended school and assisted in the farm work. At the age of 16 he left school to engage in lumbering and followed that vocation until about 11 years ago. In March 1892, he secured a position as fireman in the water works at Traverse City. After about 8 months he became assistant engineer and held that position for 2 years. He was then made chief engineer and held that position until 1900, when the city purchased the plant and he was tendered the general superintendency of the works. He accepted the situation and has been most efficient since. In company with Frank Lahym, he organized what is known as the Columbia Transfer Company, with offices of Front Street near the Columbia Hotel, and from the very first the enterprise has been most successful. The duties of Mr. Joynt as city official precludes the possiblity of his giving the transfer business much attention, so that it is almost entirely controlled and directed by his partner, who is a very thorough and capable man.

November 9, 1893, at Traverse City Herbert O. Joynt was united in marriage to Miss Anna Zimmerman, a native of Traverse City, born July 9, 1870. Her parents are John and Johannah (Myers) Zimmerman, old residents of this portion of Michigan, having resided here since 1870, though both are natives of Germany. Their home is on a well-tilled, productive farm, which they own, about one and one-half miles from Traverse City. He is now 77 years old and she numbers the years of her life at 70.

The game of politics has no charms whatever for Herbert O. Joynt. He is a consistent Republican and generally votes the ticket, but never sought or held any political office. He belongs to no religious denomination, but he and his wife usually attend the divine service at the Congregational church. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and has advanced to and taken the degrees of commandery. At the present time he is the worshipful master of the blue lodge, captain of the host in the chapter and sword bearer in commandery. He is also a member of the Elks. Though still young in years, he has had much experience in life and has shown a physical and mental strength which has enabled him to cope well with the difficulties to be encountered in the battle of life. What he has accomplished in the 10 or 12 years since he attained his majority bespeaks for him a brilliant future.

(Special to Canadian Observer)

Camlachie, Aug 10- John Joynt, a farmer residing on the Egremont road a half mile west of Camlachie, was found dead in his farmhouse on Saturday afternoon. He had been dead for about a week.

Joynt, who was known to suffer from heart trouble, had insisted on staying alone at the farm. He had intended going away on a visit a week ago Saturday and when his neighbors failed to observe him around they concluded he had taken his trip. On Saturday Charles Cates and son went to the farm on business. They noticed that the horse in the stable was apparently unfed and unwatered and became suspicious. They wired to Mr. Joynt's son-in-law, F.W. McCordic of Thedford, and got permission to enter the house. Mr. Joynt was found dead.

Excerpts from Letter written by Gerald C. Joynt, Birmingham, MI 48010 circa 1966

...It runs in my memory that Grandpa Christopher came to Canada, Brockville, Ont. in 1836. My father John was born in Brockville, Ontario and came to Gagetown, Michigan in the thumb? Huron County in 1877. I know because he was born in 1870 (John C.) and was 7 when Christopher L. moved his family here....

...The only thing I remember about Grampa Christopher was his picking up hot coals in his fingers from the kitchen stove to light his pipe. He visited us once for a week or so in Sebewa and his grave is in Hope Cemetary.

In 1989 Gerald C. Joynt's son Robert L. Joynt of Batavia, IL wrote in a letter that his father still lived at the Birmingham address.

From this information I gather the Christopher Joynt mentioned here was Christopher Layng Joynt.

From unknown newspaper Sebewa, MI 1936:

John C. Joynt died at his home in Sebewa Center, Monday night, Apr. 20, after a two weeks' illness when pneumonia developed, causing death at the age of 66 years, one month.

Mr. Joynt was born in Ontario, Canada, March 24, 1870. At the age of four years he moved with his parents, Christopher and Kathryn Joynt to Hope, Mich.

May 24, 1890 he was united in marriage to Miss Mabel Williams. To this union four children were born, William, Mrs. Merriel Joynt Gierman and Gerald, all of Lansing, Wesley of Tucson, Arizona. These with the wife, survive, also four grandchildren, two brothers and two sisters, Edward and Mrs. Letticia Joynt Baker of Hope, Robert and Mrs. Anna Joynt Miller of Bay City.

Mr. and Mrs. Joynt and family moved to Sebewa in 1912. He was a faithful worker in the Sebewa Center M.E. church.

The funeral was held Wednesday at the M.E. church at Sebewa Center, Rev. N.R. Lawrason officiating. Burial was in Sebewa Cemetery. Pallbearers were Leonard Buchner, Harry York, Ben Probasco, Ross ?rann, Harry Meyers and Robert Gierman.

They had a very beautiful daughter named Corita, another, my age, named Florence. Fred took all the messages; to the town in Morse Code; at the rail road station as he was station master. He carried the mail over to the general store (post office) and I remember the candy counter 1c. They had a lovely two story house, white. Outside plumbing. A favourite family story has it that Peter was tricked by his older brother Alec into hiring him as an extra during haying season not knowing Alec was in fact his long lost brother. Apparently Alec left home when he was just 15 and Peter 9, then returned for the first time on a surprise visit by train 40 years later. Alec got off the train in Chesterville, walked a short distance to the Hotel and enquired about Peter. He was told Peter was at a table there with friends and so Alec approached Peter and asked if he could use a hand on the farm for the haying season, struck a deal without introduction and rode to Peter's farm in the buggy with him. When the two of them arrived together Peter's wife Sarah recognised the family resemblance and laughed at Peter for being tricked by his brother.
