A Little Bit of Ireland

PIGOT'S DIRECTORY OF IRELAND, 1824

GORT

Is a small, improving, post and market town, in the county of Galway, ninety-nine miles west by south of Dublin, eighteen south-east of Galway, twelve south-west of Loughrea, and fifteen north of Ennis. It consists of three principal streets concentring in the square, where the market is held; it is remarkably clean, the streets are spacious and the houses are well built. The place is the property of Lord Gort, and promises to become a town of considerable business. The church is a handsome edifice with a steeple; there is also a neat slated Roman Catholic chapel. Here is a good barrack for a detachment of horse, a court house, where the sessions are held, and a manor court, for the recovery of small debts. It has a good market on Saturday, and four fairs in the year, viz; on the 17th of March, the 10th of May, the 11th of August and the 7th of November. Population about 1800.

POST OFFICE- Post Master, Mr. Michael Tohy. The Dublin mail is despatches at thirty-two minutes past three to Ennis, and returns at five minutes past eight in the morning. The mail to Loughrea every morning at fifty-two minutes past eight, and returns at twenty-five minutes past three in the afternoon. The mail is sent to Burrin on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, and returns the same time.
