     Mrs. Rose Watters quietly observed her 102th birthday at her home.

10 YEARS AGO (1937)
    Richard Wilmeth, student at the University of Iowa, was elected to Phi Betta Kappa, national honorary scholastic fraternity.
    Funeral services were held for Arthur Burnaugh.

15 YEARS AGO (1932)
     Pete Eckstrom suffered a gun wound in the hand when the gun accidentally discharged.
    Original chapter A of PEO observed its 63rd anniversary at the home of Mrs. R.E. Merritt on North Main.

20 YEARS AGO (1927)
    Mrs. K.A. Bergdahl was the hostess at the meeting of the Lutheran Ladies society. Mrs. Axel Bergdahl was a guest.
    B.E. Seeley was elected director of the Iowa Beef Producers association at a meeting held in Des Moines.

25 YEARS AGO
    Mrs. Mary Van Cise resigned as director of the Henry county Red Cross after a number of years service. Stanley Miller was appointed to the new position.
    Robert Wilson, son of Rev. and Mrs. O.P. Wilson was ill with the measles.

30 YEARS AGO (1917)
    Prof. Elder, physical director of the Y.M.C.A. had resigned from his work. He was succeeded by Ome Johnson of Ottumwa.

35 YEARS AGO (1912)
    A marriage license was issued to Robert King Milward of Omaha, Nebr., and Edna M. Beaber of Rome.

5 YEARS AGO (1942)
    Announcement was made of the marriage of Ruby Lamb and Earl Kitch of Dec 10 at Canton, Mo.

10 YEARS AGO (1937)
    John Craig of Oakland Mills suffered a foot injury received when he accidentally ran a pitch fork into it.
    A marriage license was issued to Frank Patterson of Kalona, and Ruth Statter of Fairfield.

15 YEARS AGO (1932)
    Work on the taking-up of the K-line tracks was to begin soon. Material was already on the ground for the tearing down of the bridge across Skunk river.
    Mr. and Mrs. Byron Jeffrey were the parents of a baby boy born at the Mercy hospital. She was formerly Miss Alice Wright.
    Mrs. Isaac Bates passed away in her home in Trenton after two years of intense suffering.

25 YEARS AGO (1922)
    Mr. and Mrs. Fred Brandel were the parents of a son Jack Milton. Mrs. Brandel was formerly Eobah Bergdahl.
    Funeral service was held for Miss Mayme Hargrove.

30 YEARS AGO (1917)
    Iva M. Self of New London and George Rugg were married at the home of the groom's brother, Jesse Rugg on Lincoln street.

35 YEARS AGO (1912)
    Miss Anna Davis of this city and C.A. Swan of Spring Valley, Minn., were married at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wait on South Harrison.
    Mrs. Jennie C. Bedsworth died at her home on West Washington street.

5 YEARS AGO
    Miss Eloise Calhoun, piano instructor at Iowa Wesleyan, presented the following students in a recital: Jean Weir, Jeannette Prouty, Virginia Ebert, Evelyn Sorden, Nell Louise Minear, Suzanne Ward, Randall Vance, Carol Hayes, and Sally Ristine. Evelyn Rukgaber and Patricia Slabaugh, pupils of Prof. S.W. Ham, assisted. Accompanists were Jayne Staebler and Thomas Roberts.

10 YEARS AGO (1937)
    Miss Gertrude Schmidt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Schmidt, of Winfield, had accepted a position as head dietician and manager of the cafeteria at the Mt. Pleasant state hospital.
    R.K. Crane resigned as local fireman after 34 years of service. Lloyd Hill was appointed to fill the vacancy.
    Francis Kephart, 24, was taken by death at Memorial hospital following an operation of appendicitis.
    Mr. and Mrs. E.L. Combs of New London were the parents of a son born at the Memorial hospital. 
    The home of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Smith of Lockridge was destroyed by fire. Mrs. Smith was the daughter of Mrs. Edward Craff.

15 YEARS AGO (1932)
    The Ladies class of the Methodist church met at the church basement for a covered dish luncheon and quilting bee on Jan. 27. Two quilts were quilted for Mrs. E.A. Bentzinger.

20 YEARS AGO (1927)
    Mrs. Mary J. McMillan passed away at her home in the south part of town.
    Mr. and Mrs. J.M. McLaughlin of Burlington welcomed a little son. Mr. McLaughlin was (and still is) court reporter.

30 YEARS AGO (1917)
    Dan Curl was seriously ill at his home on North Lincoln.

5 YEARS AGO (1942)
    Miss Gwen Sheldon announced the opening of a Tap Dance school at the hall over Skelly's station. Private or class instruction would be given.
    Mrs. Dale Wick was recovering from a fractured kneecap which she suffered Christmas night in a fall.
    Mike Haymaker, 58, was killed at a street crossing in Winfield by a car driven by a Winfield high school student unable to stop due to icy roads.

10 YEARS AGO (1937)
    A large audience enjoyed the high school play "Haunted". The cast included Gene Henry, Jack McCormick, Austin Evans, Jean Stith, and Bertha Giddens.

15 YEARS AGO (1932)
    Dan Brennerman, 59, died at his home near Mt. Union.
    Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Anderson were the parents of a boy born Jan. 26 at their home on Lee street.
    The fire department was called to the W.W. Brownell home on East Madison to put out a chimney blaze.

25 YEARS AGO
    D.L. Cookes was the possessor of a fine new 7-passenger touring car.

30 YEARS AGO (1917)
    Butter was 38c a pound at Stiles Brothers store. Eggs were 37c a dozen.

5 YEARS AGO (1942)
    James Cruikshank, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Cruikshank of this city, had been named assistant principal of Nolan Intermediate School in Detroit, Mich.
    Funeral services were held for Mrs. Margaret Ingwersen at the Cookes Funeral Home.

20 YEARS AGO (1927)
    Mrs. W.T. Johnson was the honored guest at a pleasant gathering of relatives a the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. G.C. Masters, in honor of her eighty-fifth birthday.

25 YEARS AGO (1922)
    Lillian Harris of Lowell and Loren Dickey of West Point were married in this city.
    Funeral services were held for Mrs. Nancy Gill at the home of her son, E.N. Gill.

30 YEARS AGO (1917)
    A son was welcomed into the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Van Brussel.

35 YEARS AGO (1912)
    Harry Thomas and Mabel Grisson were married at Saginaw, Mich.
    Josephine Williams and Charles Baxter, both of Lowell, were married.
    Abe Tulk passed away at his home northwest of the city.

    Boyd Anderson moved his barber shop to the west side of the square in the room formerly occupied by White's Used Furniture.

15 YEARS AGO (1932)
    Miss Helen Rasmus headed the high school honor roll. Virginia Holland was second.
    Marriage licenses issued during the month included: Everett Hulme of Mt. Pleasant and Ethel Johns of Beacon; Walter Rauscher of Crawfordsville and Jessie Ford of Mt. Pleasant; Francis Smith of Wayland and Geraldine Ross of Wayland.

20 YEARS AGO (1927)
    Irvin Munger, son of Dr. and Mrs. M.W. Munger, suffered burns when a chemical substance exploded on his face while working in the high school laboratory.
    Mrs. Ellen Cox, widow of John Cox, passed away at her home on West Pearl street.

25 YEARS AGO (1922)
    Mrs. Delora Wilkins Blakely died at her home in Salt Lake City.

30 YEARS AGO (1917)
    Word came of the death of George E. Throop at Davenport. He was at one time a partner in the News. Burial was in Forest Home.

35 YEARS AGO (1912)
    Miss Ruth Kitchen entertained the girls of the local telephone office at her home on East Washington.

5 YEARS AGO.
    Miss Jane Graham led the senior high school class of 1942 with a 3.92 average. Marjorie Gettchell was second with 3.67.

10 YEARS AGO.
    Mr. and Mrs. Chauncey Wilmeth of Salem were the parents of triplets, two girls and a boy, the first to be born in Memorial Hospital in the fifteen years it had been in use.

15 YEARS AGO.
    Mr. and Mrs. Iliff Shumaker of Salem were the parents of a daughter.
    Velma Church, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Church, and Adolph Walters, son of Mr .and Mrs. W.G. Walters, were married at the Catholic rectory in Monmouth, Ill.

20 YEARS AGO.
    Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Peterson of Olds were the parents of a son born at the Memorial Hospital.
    Frank Miller died at the hospital here. He was a brother of Mrs. Fred Anderson on East Monroe.

25 YEARS AGO.
    Mr. and Mrs. Grover Thompson on East Madison were the parents of a girl.
    J.O. Brown sold the Electrical store to Z.M.and Lee Levix.

30 YEARS AGO.
    A son was born to Mr .and Mrs. R.A. Stewart.
    Word was received here of the birth of a girl to Mr. and Mrs. Glen Tallman of Omaha.

35 YEARS AGO.
    George Luberger, Sr., was stricken with paralysis which made his left side helpless.

    Death claimed Mrs. Dora Zook.
    Anna Sheets and Damien Burns were married at the Catholic church, the Rev. M.T. Gaffney in charge.
    George Woods, employe at Eppers garage, died at the University hospital in Iowa City.

10 YEARS AGO.
    Mr. and Mrs. Penn Smith of Salem celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary.
    Mr and Mrs. Glen Donald were the parents of a son born at the hospital.
    Mrs. Ann Wilson passed away at her home in Trenton.

25 YEARS AGO.
    The "Bee Hive" a new variety store, was opened by J.N. Ross.
    Mrs. Elza Brown passed away suddenly at the home of her son, C.A. Brown.
    Kenneth Craig, four months old son of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Quillen, passed away.

30 YEARS AGO.
    Mr. and Mrs. Don Fish were the parents of a daughter.
    Mr. and Mrs. D.M. Cowell of Salem were the parents of a son.
    John Codner of New London dropped dead on the street here.
    S.C. Follansbee passed away on Lincoln street.

35 YEARS AGO.
    Henry Melvin Tipton, 8 months old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Tipton, passed away.
    Mrs. N.E. Cory, wife of Rev. Cory, former Christian church pastor, died at Keokuk.

    Mrs. Henry Traut died at the Memorial Hospital following an operation for the removal of a foot.
    Mrs. Elizabeth Gillaspey of West Clay died at the hospital.
    Mrs. Rose Donahue died at the hospital following a lingering illness.

10 YEARS AGO.
    Sheriff Manning Cline and Marshal Earl Drewer captured Kenneth Hollenbech of Canton, Ill, wanted by Illinois officers for larceny. He was taken into custody after a chase from New London to West Burlington.

15 YEARS AGO.
    PEO Sisterhood had a Mother Goose party with Mrs. F.M. Edwards.
    The Rev. J.R. Frazer of the Presbyterian church was called to the pastorate at Wapello.
    Chester Mosens, employee at the ISU, was burned in a minor explosion at the gas plant.

20 YEARS AGO.
    Mr. and Mrs. John E. Brown observed their 25th wedding anniversary at their home in South Main street.
    Word was received of the death of Mr. Munsell, husband of Lizzie Davis Munsell in Chicago.

30 YEARS AGO.
    Cyrus N. Brown passed away at his home on West Pearl.
    Mrs. S.C. Howe, wife of Prof. Howe of Howe's academy, passed away at home on South Jefferson street.

35 YEARS AGO.
    Mrs. Hugh Cozier of Mt. Union passed away at her home.
    Invitations were out for the wedding of Elsie Lane of Trenton and John Egli of Rome.

5 YEARS AGO.
    3 local men suffered injuries and were in the hospital as the result of an accident on highway 34 east. Warren White was the most seriously injured. Also injured were Edward Maher, driver of the car and Kermit Bear, driver of the other car.

10 YEARS AGO.
    Donald Hayward, 17 months old son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Hayward, passed away suddenly in the doctor's office.
    Word had been received of the birth of a son to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Shaffner from Mt. Pleasant.

15 YEARS AGO.
    Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hilbrant were the parents of a girl born at the Memorial hospital.

25 YEARS AGO.
    Enoch Beery, prominent county resident, passed away in Salem. He at one time represented the county in the state legislature.
    Funeral service was held at the Baptist church for Mrs. Eliza Ann Brown.

30 YEARS AGO.
    Thomas Bradford of Mt. Pleasant and Amanda Canfield of Salem were married at the Baptist parsonage.

35 YEARS AGO.
    Bert Morrison, formerly of Salem, passed away at Ft. Madison from pneumonia. His wife was formerly Stella Bevans, a Mt. Pleasant girl.
    A marriage license was issued to Edgar Payne of Waylabnd and Cordic Lance of Noble.

    Word was received here of the marriage of Bernadine Hammes of Pocahontas and John Marlof of Champaign, Ill. on Feb. 5 at Urbana. He is the son of Mr .and Mrs. G.F. Marlof.

15 YEARS AGO.
    Mr. and Mrs. Glen Hoffman were the parents of a son born at the hospital.
    Mr. and Mrs. Emerson Brown celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary by entertaining at their home north of Salem.
    Mr. and Mrs. Joe Graber of Wayland were the parents of a girl.

20 YEARS AGO.
    The funeral for Henry Woodsmall, two weeks old son of Mr and Mrs. Edward Woodsmall, was held.
    The infant daughter of Mr and Mrs. Charles Swailes on North Jefferson died.

25 YEARS AGO.
    A marriage license was issued to Jennings Coleman of Mt. Pleasant and Bertha Woodruff of New London.

35 YEARS AGO.
    Will Lyons of Brighton and Laura Bates of Mt. Pleasant were married at the home of the bride's father, Isaac Bates of Trenton.

    Mr. and Mrs. Art Good purchased the Coffee Shop from Melvyn Smith and Ted Ross.

10 YEARS AGO.
    Helen Miller, IWC student from Burlington, was reported to have been found in Philadelphia after a wide spread search for her following her disappearance.
    Glen Folker suffered a broken knee as a result of a fall on the ice.

15 YEARS AGO.
    Mrs. Ihff Upton died at her home northwest of the city.

20 YEARS AGO.
    Jane Hobbs entertained 24 friends in honor of her 12th birthday.
    Alice Johnson and Harlan Johnson were married Feb. 9 at the home of Rev. Frank Weston.

25 YEARS AGO.
    Comrade William K. Hobart, 17th Iowa Infantry, passed away at home on North White street.
    A marriage license was issued to George Barquist of Olds and Florence Hultquist of Swedesburg.

30 YEARS AGO.
    Hervey Morris was appointed to the military academy at West Point.

5 YEARS AGO.
    Word was received that Robert Eugene ("Creamy") Taylor was injured while fighting with Gen. MacArthur's troops in the Philippine islands. He was the first man from Winfield to be reported injured during the war.

10 YEARS AGO.
    William Britton passed away at the hospital from pneumonia.
    Mrs. Katherine Liscomb observed her 86th birthday on Feb. 10.

15 YEARS AGO.
    William Dailey of this city passed away in Des Moines. The body was brought here.

20 YEARS AGO.
    Winifred Phelps entertained the H.B.P. club in honor of her birthday.
    Prof. and Mrs. John Chittum were the parents of a son.

25 YEARS AGO.
    Henry Leedham died at his home on South Adams street.
    A marriage license was issued to Joe Reschley of Wayland and Anna Hunt of this city.

    Wanda Hart won the 7th and 8th grade spelling contest held at Junior High and was to represent Mt. Pleasant in the county contest.

15 YEARS AGO.
    Announcement was made of the engagement of Elin Willits and Wilbur Bennett.
    Joe C. Tracy passed away at his home near Kellerton. He was the son of the late Louisa J. Tracy.

20 YEARS AGO.
    The city installed stop signs at the intersections.

25 YEARS AGO.
    A daughter was born to Mr .and Mrs. Vern Walker. She was formerly Wilma Hall.
    Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Smith celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary.

    Miss Ruth Anita Irons, Mason City, and E.A. Hayes of this city, were married at Mason City.
    A marriage license was issued to Floyd Garrison and Helen Roberts, both of Stockport.

15 YEARS AGO.
    Announcement was made of the marriage of Mildred Williams and Joe Schlatter at Memphis, Mo., on Nov. 10, 1931.
    Mrs. Henry Schulte of southeast of Salem suffered a broken leg while helping to get the car through the mud.

30 YEARS AGO.
    Mrs. William Burke of south of town passed away.
    Christian Rhode passed away at the J.G. Lauterbach home, where he had been living.
    Frank Brown, colored, better known as "Big Boy", was being tried for assault with intent to commit murder.

35 YEARS AGO.
    A marriage license was issued to John Egli of Rome and Elsie Lane of Mt. Pleasant.

    Lillian Peckham was the new home demonstration agent.
    Mr. and Mrs. Grant Peterson were the parents of a son.
    Mrs. Will Dyall passed away.

    Funeral service was held for Frank Lyons.
    Wima Watson became the bride of C. Arthur Young October 1.

15 YEARS AGO.
    200 attended the annual RNA convention at Hillsboro.
    A.J. Schmoker died at Winfield.

20 YEARS AGO.
    The Auditorium theater on East Monroe street was sold by Mrs. Mabel Benner of Macomb, Ill., to E.J. Heathers of Quincy.

25 YEARS AGO.
    Mrs. Isaac McPheron died at her home near Trenton.
    Dorothea Tomlinson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I.H. Tomlinson, was married to David Marcus of Brooklyn, N.Y.

    Miss Ella Thompson, sister of Mrs. J.L. Whitney and Wm. C. Heden, both of Livonia, Mo., were married at the Whitney home.

    Garnes Whittlesley and Howard Miller were married at the Methodist parsonage.

    Bernhart Carl Frederick Schultz, 92, passed away at New London.
    Thelma Fye and Everett Young were married October 4.
    Mrs. Axel Norman of near Olds died October 5.
    Mr. and Mrs. Donald Tyrell of Winfield were the parents of a daughter.

10 YEARS AGO.
    Paul Senmids was elected commander of the American Legion post. Other officers were T.R. Taylor, vice commander, Henry Wahlborg, adjutant; Ursa McCoy, finance officer; Arthur Murray, chaplin; Dan Winter, historian; Glenn Campbell, sergeant at arms; Heroen Heaton, 3 year term trustee.

15 YEARS AGO.
    Mrs. Honora Gaffney died at the home of her son Rev. M.T. Gaffney.
    Ruth Walker of Burlington and Everett Carden of Winfield were married at Monmouth, October 5.

20 YEARS AGO.
    Announcement was made of the approaching marriage October 7 of Nancy Ambler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Ambler of Burlington, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, to Mathew G. Worster of New York city.
    The body of Israel Coleman, who died at Jacksonville, Ill, was brought for burial at Finley Chapel.

    Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Wright of Rome were the parents of a daughter.
    Merritt Cecil McCullough, son of Mr. and Mrs. T.E. McCullough, died.

30 YEARS AGO.
    Charles Wilkins sold his Jefferson street bakery to Chris Reinhart.

35 YEARS AGO.
    Dr. Frank R. Wilson died at his home in New London.

    Clarence Hite of near Trenton died.
    Mrs. John Waters passed away.

    A marriage license was issued to Woodrow Hale of Mt Union and Freda L. Isles of New London.

    A cabin belonging to L.D. Taylor and Harold McLeran south of Faulkners bridge was destroyed by fire.

    The TTT society entertained at dinner at the home of Maude Mathews honoring two recent brides. Mrs. Orlan C. Harris of Blandinsville, Ill., and Mrs. Fenton Parker of Chicago and Grace Upton, who was soon to marry Ralph Rehmel of Charles City.

    Charles Pangborn, Civil war veteran, passed away.
    A new law firm, McCoid and McCoid, was composed of J.C. and Paul McCoid
    Mr. and Mrs. Basil Huston of Olds were the parents of a daughter.

    Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Spray of New London were the parents of a son.

    William Ford, city employee, was electrocuted while working near a transformer.
    Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Owen observed their 55th wedding anniversary.

    A reception was held at the Presbyterian church for the new pastor, Rev. E.L. Jeambey and family.
    Mrs. John E. Luellen, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, died at her home in Burlington.

    Virginia Fenton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Will Fenton, celebrated her birthday with a party.
    A marriage license was issued to Elmer Bencke and Beatrice Pugh, both of Mt. Pleasant.

    Word was received of the birth of a daughter to Mr.and Mrs. Jack Thomas of Jacksonville, Ill., Oct. 8. Mrs. Thomas was formerly Lucille Alden, Wesleyan student.

    Funeral service was held for Mrs. Honora Gaffney at St. Alphonsus Catholic church.

    A marriage license was issued to Rosalie Sponberg and Elmer Danielson, both of Olds.
    Mabel Wheeler and Nathan Lamm, both of Winfield, were married Oct. 8 in Burlington.

25 YEARS AGO.
    Anna Theresa Seabranch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Seabranch, of Olds, died Oct. 9 in this city.

30 YEARS AGO.
    Wm. Cook and Alice Null, employees at the State hospital, were married by the judge of the district court.

35 YEARS AGO.
    Word was received of the birth of a son to Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Nelson of Davenport. Mrs. Nelson was formerly Margaret Sinclair of this city.

    Mrs. Belle S. Perry died at the hospital.
    Mrs. Wid Clark of New London passed away.
    Mrs. E.L. Chaney, 81, died at her home southeast of Mt. Pleasant.

    Mrs. Osbert Allender died October 10.
    A family gathering was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E.H. Gunter honoring Mrs. J.A. Hoschar's 80th birthday.

15 YEARS AGO.
    A marriage license was issued to Benjamin Shull and Gladys Amber, both of Henry county, at Monmouth, Ill.

20 YEARS AGO.
    Mrs. Teressa Arbuckle, former resident, died in a Chicago hospital.
    At St. Joseph, Mo. occurred the marriage of Golda Wiley, formerly of here to Joseph Gleason, of Detroit, Mich.

25 YEARS AGO.
    A marriage license was issued to Ray T. Scarff of Mt. Pleasant and Myrl Moul of Mt. Union.
    Mr. and Mrs. John Lane of Trenton were the parents of a son.

20 YEARS AGO.
    Mr. and Mrs. D.L. Cookes were the parents of a son.

35 YEARS AGO.
    Mt. Pleasant high school had a football team for the first time. The boys drove to Winfield for the first game in a horse drawn vehicle.

    Mr. and Mrs. Dorson Trueblood of Salem were the parents of a son.

    Fire destroyed the Hi-Hat cafe, George E. Crane Hardware store, R. Eshelman and Sons  Clothing store. Damage was estimated at $50,000 to $75,000.
