QUAKER-ROOTS-L Archives; STEPHEN HOCKETT letter; From: r. david demick<demick@ix.netcom.com
>; Date: 15 Nov 1997 Stephen Hockett and his wife
Margaret. It had previously been in
the possession of his gggrandaughter Arah Werner Bittner. I do not know when it was written or by whom as it does not
say. A brief account of Stephen Hockett
and family. He was married in N Carolina where
he and wife Margaret commenced in very low circumstance to make a living, he
having but one horse and it soon died; this lost was keenly felt, yet they
persevered. Having but little land
open to cultivate, he managed to raise a good crop of wheat and corn in one
season, on one lot of ground. Ot
being in corn the previous season a few weeks before harvest he pulled up the
corn stub or roots, his wife dropping corn therin, and he covering it with the
hoe. Then when the wheat was taken
off the ground he commenced tending his corn and this made a good crop.
I mention this that the reader may form an idea of the man. He
finally moved to Ohio, and resided ther a fiew years, and then to Indiana,
Randoplh Co where he bought land for himself and sons; and lived there until his
children were all married. Now they
had lived to a good old age but the news came to his ear that there was good
rich prairie in Iowa, and he seemed to think it would be best for him and
offspring to cross the great Father of waters.
And accordingly he and many
of his connexions came here in the spring of 1837 and settled near Salem.
But it was not long until they went the way of all the earth.
He deceased the 26th of the 6th mo 1839 72 years 2 months and 20 days.
His wife deceased 23d of ninth mo 1843; aged 76years 8 months and 11
days. They were both consistent
members of the Society of Friends. Their
children were all living (eleven in number) at the time of her death, and if I
am not mistaken, had not a doctor in their family until they were all grown. The following table will show
the condition of their generations at the time of her death, it being written
about that time by some of the relatives and kept in manuscript.
and as many of their relatives are subscribers and readers of the
Democrat, thought it would confer a favor on them to have it published

HOCKETT: Unnamed newspaper obituary, in obituary files of Mt.
Pleasant Public Library, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; probably from 'Mt. Pleasant News':
JOHN M. HOCKETT. John M. Hockett was born in Randolph Co., Indiana,
Sept. 21, 1837. When only one year
old his parents moved to Iowa and settled near his late residence.
He was married to Mary E. Hammar October 14, 1858. He had a birthright membership with the Society of
Friends, and was converted near the age of thirty. His faith in Christ increased and the path grew brighter as
the end drew near. He has
frequently expressed a desire to be ready to meet the Master when the summons
should come. After returning from Salem, near five o'clock
Thursday evening, he was taken with apoplexy, and continued unconscious until he
passed away at 12:15 the next day, February 20, 1903. He leaves a faithful and loving wife, one boy whom
they have raised from childhood, three sisters and three brothers, nieces and
nephews and a host of friends to mourn the loss. Funeral services were held at Cedar Creek on Sabbath
morning at 11 a.m., conducted by the pastor, Bessie Ferguson. Those present from a distance were a brother Jonathan
and nephew John Hockett from Kansas; a sister, Jane Frazier from Marshalltown,
Iowa; niece and two nephews, George Hockett and sister Nancy and Arthur Hammar
from Ringgold Co., Iowa; also a sister of Mary Hockett, Margaret Addington and
husband of Dallas Co., Iowa. +++++++++++++++++++++++++ 1900 Iowa Census, HENRY County, SALEM TWP, Series:

at her home at this place occurred the death of Mrs. Mary Coffin after quite a
long illness. The cause of her

OBITUARY. Mary M. Hockett was born Dec. 9,
1833, in Randolph Co., Indiana. She
came to this county with her parents when about five years of age. She was married to Alson G. Frazer
July 21, 1851, who died Jan. 28, 1866. Seven
children were born to this union, Edward H., Mattie Lamm, Hannah Moon, Ella
Smith, Rebecca White, Albert H., and Alson G., all of this county. She was again united in marriage to
John M. Coffin Aug. 27, 1896; who, with her children, thirty-five grandchildren,
four great grandchildren, two sisters and three brothers, are left to mourn the
loss of a loving wife, mother and sister. She had been in feeble health for
some years, but was taken seriously ill near the middle of April.
She bore her afflictions with patience and chrsistian fortitude, until
released by death at 5 o'clock p.m., Aug. 2, 1904. An impressive funeral service was
held at Cedar Creek on Aug. 3, conducted by the pastor, R(B)essie Ferguson, and
others. When the last feeble step has been
taken, And the gates of that city appear And the beautiful songs of the
angels Float out on my listening ear. When all that now seems so
mysterious Will be bright and as clear as the
day, Then the toils of the road will
seem nothing When I get to the end of the way. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ More About MARY M. HOCKETT: Age at Death (Facts Pg): 70 Burial: August 3, 1904, Cedar Creek

She was born October 1847 in Indiana per 1900 Salem, Henry County, IA
census, and died Aft. 1920 in Probably Salem, Henry County, IA. Notes for ELAM HOCKETT: From "Portrait and
Biographical Album of Henry County, Iowa"
Chicago: Acme Publishing Company, 1888, Page 501: ELAM HOCKETT, one of the prominent
and representative farmers of Henry County, was born in Salem Twp, in this
county, on the 18th of November, 1846, and is the son of Jehu and Hannah
(Frazier) Hockett, both of whom are natives of Indiana, and were among the first
settlers of Henry County, Iowa. They
came to this county when it was hardly more than a wilderness, while yet the
deer might be seen on the prairies, or the wolf be heard howling at night.
Edward Hockett, the grandfather of our subject, came to this county in
1834, and was the father of ten children, of whom the second was Jehu, the
father of our subject, who reared a family of twelve children, all of whom are
now living. Mr. Elam Hockett was the eldest of
this family, and was reared upon the farm where he now lives, on section 36,
Tippecanoe Twp. He attended a
private school, the district not yet being organized, and at that time the
county was very thinly settled. On
the 21st of February, 1869, he formed a matrimonial alliance with Miss Sarah E.
Stephenson, a native of Wayne County, Ind.
They were the parents of five children: Mary Ellen, who is now the wife
of M.H. Doan, of this county; Alfonso, Elnora, Fred and Edgar are at home. Mr. Hockett in early life learned
the carpenter's trade, which business he now carries on in connection with
general farming. He and wife belong
to the Society of Friends, and are always ready to lend a helping hand to the
needy, and to comfort the afflicted. In
politics Mr. Hockett holds very liberal views. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 1880 Jackson Twp, Henry County,

October 30, 1881 in Salem, Henry County, Iowa, son of ROBERT WHITE
and ZILPHA COOK.
He was born October 10, 1858 in Lynnville, Jasper County, Iowa, and died

Decompensation per death certificate Notes for THOMAS ELI WHITE: Passages taken from the "Blue
Book", The White Family-Tom and Rebecca, compiled by Keith H. Garretson,
Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, June 1, 1997:
ARTICLE
WRITTEN IN 1927, probably by Rebecca Frazer White: Mr. Thomas Eli White will be
remembered by Mt. Pleasant and Henry County people as an influential citizen.
For six years he was a member of the board of supervisors and for twelve
years, a member of the board of trustees of Old Whittier Quaker School at Salem. The marriage of Mr. White and Mrs.
White, then Rebecca Frazer, almost a half century ago, united two Quaker Pioneer
families, which curiously enough had followed the same general course throughout
three centuries. Both the Whites and the Frazers
were English and charter members of the William Penn Quaker Colony in
Pennsylvania. Both, within the same
decade, felt the urge for the west and settled in Indiana.
At about the same period both, families were attracted to North Carolina
which was then a southern Quaker settlement.
Both found distaste of slavery stronger than economic benefits and
removed to the pioneer settlement of Salem, Iowa, attracted there by the
Quakers, many of whom had come from the south.
Settling within a half dozen miles of each other, they became prosperous
and influential citizens, many removing to other regions, but the majority
remaining in Henry and Lee Counties. All
have remained in the Quaker Church and are members of the organization at Salem
and Cedar Creek.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ By Gladys Rebecca White King
(daughter of Thomas and Rebecca White), written at age 96 1/2, July 1997): When Thomas Eli White and Rebecca
Jane Frazer decided to marry in 1882, it was with much faith in the future.
He had a few dollars in his pocket and she had nothing at all.
They were married on Sunday so he would not miss a day's work.
He was working at helping to build Henry County's first railway, the
"K-Line", later called "Old Jerky".
They lived with her widowed mother [Mary M. (Hockett) Frazier] the first
year of their married life and then lived on rented farms for many years. He bought a small farm and later
added some adjoining land. When his
sons grew old enough to be of much help on the farm, he turned his talents to
several business projects. He
bought farmers' wool each spring and shipped it by rail to Chicago.
He also bought young calves and accompanied them to Chicago by the
carload. As time went on, they raised a
family of twelve children---all of whom became adults, which was very unusual at
that time. The welfare of the
children took first place in all my parents' plans. They were interested in giving the opportunity of the best
education available at that time and willing to do anything possible to give
them a good start in adult life. They were wise, kind, and loving
parents. With God's help they were
able to say, "We are proud of them---the whole round dozen!" +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ "The History of Henry County,
Iowa" (1982, by Henry County Bicentennial Commission), taken from the
biography of Robert H. White on page 430, written by Mrs. Gladys King [daughter
of Tom and Rebecca White]: "The oldest son of the first
family was Thomas E. White and he was the only one who remained in Henry County
and raised a family here. He was
married on October 30, 1881. They
were married on Sunday so that he would not have to miss a day's work.
He was working for the railroad and was helping to build the
"K" line (called by many "Old Jerky") that ran from Keokuk
to Mt. Pleasant. He was married to Rebecca Jane
Frazer of the Denova community. They
met when a group of young men from Salem rode horses to the Denova school house
to attend a weekly Spelling Bee. Thomas E. White and Rebecca Frazer
faced life together with almost nothing. He
had a few dollars in his pocket and she had nothing.
Her mother was a widow and they lived with her the first year of their
married life. At the end of the
first year, they rented a farm. He
traded his over coat for a heating stove because as he said, "The coat
would only keep me warm, but the heater will keep us both warm." Through his life, Thomas White was
a farmer, a livestock buyer, and several other occupations.
He was a Supervisor of Henry County from 1914 to 1920. There were twelve chidren born to
this union, all of whom became adults. Four
are still living. . . . Thomas White died suddenly on
January 19, 1924 and is buried in South Cemetery at Salem.
Rebecca Frazer White remained a widow until March 29, 1953 when she died
in the hospital at Mt. Pleasant at the age of 91, and was buried at Salem.
A devoted husband and father. A
wise and loving wife and mother. A great legacy left for the children and
grandchildren." (Written by Mrs. Gladys White King, daughter of Tom and
Rebecca White] +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Obituary, "Salem News",
January 24, 1924:
THOMAS ELI WHITE Thomas Eli White was born Oct. 10,
1858 at Lynnville, Jasper county, Iowa; departed this life Jan. 19, 1924 at
Salem, Iowa aged 65 years, 3 mon. 9 days. At the age of five years he came
with his parents to Henry county and from that time has made this county his
home. He was united in marriage to
Rebecca Frazier Oct. 30, 1881, and to this union were born the following
children: Mrs. Earl Dillavou, Mrs. S. D. Garretson, Fred White of Salem; Mrs.
Max Spray of Hillsboro, Mrs. J. A. Mills of Winnebago City, Minn; Roy White of
Salem, Dr. Geo. White of Riverside, Ralph White and Mrs. Marion King of Salem;
Leota, Vera and Darrel at home. Mr. White also leaves one brother
George of Richland, Oregon; two sisters Mrs. E. H. Ratliff of Nezperce, Idaho;
one half-brother Ray of Knoxville, Ia; two half-sisters Mrs. Rev. C. W. Cochran
of Muscatine, Ia and Mrs. Steve Morris of Mt. Sterling, Ia.; and thirty-six
grandchildren. He is the first to break the family
circle and the remaining ones have the sympathy of a host of friends and loved
ones in their hour of sorrow. About twenty-seven years ago during
a revival conducted by Rev. Mrs. Sutliff at the Maple Grove schoolhouse, he
received Christ as his personal Savior. He
was a birthright Friend, but at the time of his conversion by his request was
received into the active membership in the Cedar Friends church.
Some years later he had his membership transferred to Salem meeting where
he has loyally supported the work. For a number of years he has been
prominent in the affairs of the county having served as a member of the board of
supervisors for six years, and at the time of his death was a member of the
board of appraisers for inheritance tax; also a member of the board of education
of Salem. He was a friend to all and
especially to those in need. A
great lover of home and was never so happy as when his loved ones were all
around him. The community has lost
a friend, the children a kind and loving father, and the wife a devoted husband,
and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Yet our loss is his gain, and surely the prayer expressed by his favorite
hymn, "Pass Me Not, Oh Gentle Savior," will not be unheard by the one
who doeth all things well. The funeral services were held in
the M.E. church which was filled to its utmost with friends and relatives,
testifying to the high esteem in which he was held." ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ More About THOMAS ELI WHITE: Burial: January 1924, Salem South
